Mohan Krishna Indraganti has always been a director who never backs off from trying different stories. This time he teams up with Sudheer Babu and the tollywood debutant Aditi Rao Hydri for a love story. The trailer, teaser and songs already gave an indication of a feel good love story. Let's see if the feel after watching the movie is good enough.
Sammohanam is the love story between Vijay ( Sudheer Babu), a childhood storybook illustrator and a super star actress Sameera (Aditi Rao). Vijay is someone who hates movie stars for how they act their entire life hiding their inner self and his father Sarva (Naresh) is a movie buff who keeps watching movies all the time and is also a passionate actor. Sarva gives his house for a movie shooting during which Vijay and Sameera meet and become friends. Vijay becomes the telugu coach for Sameera and they immediately admire each other. The admiration turns into love for Vijay and proposes Sameera. Will Sameera accept Vijay's love ? What are the reasons which make them apart and how will they re-unite forms the rest of the story.
Sudheer Babu as Vijay is an unbelievably improved actor. Few years back, no one would have ever thought Sudheer could perform in a character like Vijay. He absolutely nailed it. Especially the way he pronounces the "ottulu" in telugu like Abadd'h'am instead of Abaddam and all adds to his acting ability. Sammohanam is Aditi Rao's first direct film in telugu and she gives her own dubbing. She has owned the character of Sameera and dwells in the same which has a high scope of acting. Her beauty is very well captured and it is a perfect debut for her in tollywood. Naresh as Sarva (hero's father) who loves acting is the saving grace after a series of slow scenes. He is the main source of entertainment in the movie around Rahul Ramakrisha and Abhay Bethiganti as hero's friends. They brought in so many laughs together. Nandu as hero Kishore Babu was okay. Entire casting is a big plus to the movie. The songs are good and the background could have been better.
A lot of credit for the movie should go to the director Mohan Krishna Indraganti. He has already proven his narrating skills many times and he does it once again. He doesn't waste any time in the movie to bring out the characters' intentions in the movie. The lunch discussion of the hero family on Modern Art vs Movies was brought to indicate that the hero hates movies and movie stars whereas his father admires movies.
The movie has a very good storyline and the director could have easily chosen a commercial screenplay for it but the soul of the movie is the love story which would have been lost had he exploited the commercial aspect. This movie might fail miserably at the B and C centers for the number of slow scenes in the movie but the narration was commendable. The only drawback is that the slow scenes had an even slow background score. Sometimes, there is absolutely no BGM for the whole scene like the one between hero and heroine at the terrace. The feel was felt but it was too silent for too long.
The scenes where the rapport is built between hero and heroine in the first half are very well taken. The cinematography and production values are really good. Even though the director didn't deviate from the storyline, the humor was always there in the form of Naresh and other comedians. The climax was the best part for me in the movie. The director portrays an analogy of stars and the characters in the movie during the first book release of the hero "Taralu Digivachina Vela" and conveys the love between the hero and heroine. Haven't felt so happy for a climax in a long time. Experience the love.
