After Power star disappointed us with Agnyaatavasi in 2018, Mega power star comes with Rangasthalam to offer some respite to the mega fans. He teams up with Sukumar this time after scoring a hit with Dhruva although with a completely different makeover and character. The teaser and trailer of the movie including Devi Sri Prasad's massy numbers gave perfect publicity before the release. Let us see if the much hyped Ram Charan and Sukumar combination lives up to the expectations of the audience.
Rangasthalam is a revenge drama where our hero with hearing difficulties Chitti Babu, an engineer who provides water supply to all the farmers in the village and his well-read brother Kumar Babu cannot control the attrocities of the ruthless President of the village Jagapati Babu who steals all the money from the villagers in the form of loans. How do the brothers stop the President from torturing the villagers? In the process, how does our hero fall for Rama Lakshmi? What happens to everyone who stands up against the President in the village? All these questions form the storyline.
As I mentioned earlier, casting is the key to every movie and Sukumar is spot on in Rangasthalam. Ram Charan as Chitti Babu is the best character he has ever portrayed on screen. Chitti babu answers everyone who thinks he is not good at expressing. He has worked really hard on the Godavari slang and it payed off really well in the movie. Few of his dialogues reminds us of Chiranjeevi's powerful dialogue delivery. Samantha as Rama lakshmi is just perfect. It is not easy for a beauty doll like Sam to dress up like Rama Lakshmi working in a farm, cleaning buffaloes by the river and make it look so natural. Credit to her for pulling it off brilliantly. Her dubbing sounded really good. Anasuya is definitely a show stealer. Rangammatta is a tailor made role to show her acting skills. Every frame she was in, she outlooked everyone on the screen including Samantha in a few shots. Rangammatta is an asset to the storyline and Anasuya's charisma pulls it off. Aadi Pinshetty as Kumar Babu is another artist with a perfect character which suits him. He has the right attitude for the role and he did a great job. Jagapati babu as the President of Rangasthalam has owned the character. Every time he is on screen, there is a rage which comes into the audience and is another perfect pick. Prakash Raj's character was okay. Jabardasth Mahesh did an amazing job and needs a special mention. Naresh as Chitti babu's father did a good job. Rest of them had their own share of contributions.
Right from the teaser, audience were really excited to see this combination on screen and they truly don't disappoint. The movie had the right mix of emotion, drama and action which holds so much importance in the success of a movie. The entire first half of the movie was amazing. When a character like Chitti babu with hearing disability comes into Sukumar's head, he will not leave any stone unturned and he did just that. He used that to his advantage creating the humor in every way possible. Charan too expressed it really well showing his ear every time someone near him talks. Taking all the action and drama into the fore, Sukumar doesn't miss his logical touches throughout the film.
Sukumar has this amazing ability to elevate the movie with pre-interval and interval sequences. Dialogues like "Rangastalaaniki kotha jenda vacchindhi" add to the feel. The action sequences before the interval were very well shot. Most of the times when taking an action drama like this, the heroine just gets a namesake role but the love story of Chitti babu and Rama lakshmi has got the right screen time to justify their love. The godavari slang in every scene of the movie brings such a nativity to the film that it outdoes SVSC.
The only drawback is that the pace of the movie drops after the first half. The first half has so much balance between gripping and emotional scenes whereas in the second half, the emotion outweighs the former. All the questions in the first half are answered well in the second half. One has to credit the DOP Ratnavelu for how well he shot a twist to Kumar Babu's character in such a great detail. Sukumar's screenplay and direction is just augmented by Ratnavelu's DOP. Such an eye feast. The only part of the movie which I did not come completely satisfied out of is Prakash Raj's Dakshina Murty. It was more of a filling in all the gaps kind of role.
Nevertheless, Rangasthalam is definitely a crowd puller for the amount of publicity the movie has got prior to its release. Sukku Charan combo doesn't disappoint. The movie has every reason to impress and it appeals to all classes of the audience. Don't miss it.
