The last time Nitiin and Trivikram combined, they gave the audience a refreshing "A Aa". But facing a lot of heat after Agnyatavasi, let's see how good of a story did Trivikram give to Nitiin and Krishna Chaitanya under the prestigious Pawan Kalyan creative works. The movie's trailer, songs have already created a lot of interest in the movie-goers. Let us see how it actually turned up.
Mohan Ranga (MR) is a middle class Indian who aspires to go to the United States and mint money after he finds out that his childhood crush leaves for studies in the US. Megha Subramanyam is a masters student in United States. After getting his VISA rejected thrice, MR finds a petty way to finally come to the States and illogically finds a job with the help of a more illogical friend at first sight. On his first day after landing in New York, MR meets Megha in an unusual circumstance and with the help of the story's grace, they tend to meet each other often in New York just like neighbors in Jubilee Hills. In the process, they realize that they like each other but do not convey their love because of god-knows-why reasons which leads to the heroine returning to India. How will they unite and under what circumstances forms the rest of the story.
The "Youth Star" Nitiin who played Mohan Ranga was his usual self and played the role well. Acting in characters like these became natural to Nitiin after Ishq and he pulls it off easily. Megha Aakash was a misfit. Her character was inconsistent and she kept adding weight as the movie progressed. In fact, her friend character in the first half Ashu Reddy looked way cuter than she did. She is definitely not a natural actor and needs to work very hard on her skills. Madhusudan who played the friend at first sight character to Nitiin tried some posh American dialogue delivery which did not suit him. Rao Ramesh was given a useless role which needed overaction and he provided the same. Naresh and Pragati as Nitiin's parents were okay. Narra Srinivas (Gabbar Singh fame) played Dr. Mitra who is a Psychiatrist which was another overacting necessary role which was irritating. Prabhas Seenu brought in good laughs everytime he came on screen. Satya of Jabardasth fame is a perfect replacement for Sunil and he brought in a few laughs as well.
After Agnyatavaasi, Trivikram's writings were questioned by a number of critics. One would expect him to make a strong comeback with "Chal Mohan Ranga". But you would wonder what story did Trivikram even give to the director and Nitiin after watching the movie because every scene is logicless/pointless/baseless. Right from the scene where Nitiin lands in US till the pre-climax scenes between Dr. Mitra and Rao Ramesh's, the total storyline is a question mark.
The story could not establish a proper relationship status between the hero and heroine in the first half and you would wonder what was the serious reason which made the hero and heroine not convey their liking towards each other. First half did have some humor and entertainment but the story was going nowhere. In the second half, when the hero comes to the heroine after realizing what he is losing in his life, the story is just dragged to increase the screen time with the hero hitting heroine's mom with his car and other meaningless scenes. The dialogues aren't catchy either.
The best part of the movie was undoubtedly Thaman's music and background score. They were flawless. The comedy scenes of Prabhas Seenu as the boss of Nitiin were really funny. But they had no effect on the storyline. The scenes of hero hitting Satya were adjusted in the story just to make some laughs but they were funny enough. There's one commercial fight in the movie and a Sreenu Vytla kind of screenplay during the pre climax scenes between Dr. Mitra and Rao Ramesh which frustrates you even more.
Gone are the days where movies play only with the craze of a hero or a director. We witnessed Agnyatavaasi bombing miserably at the box office even after having a huge star base. Nitiin probably thought doing a movie under Pawan Kalyan creative works with a Trivikram's story and mentioning PK in three to four scenes would be enough to make a movie hit. The entire crew failed all the way through story telling with lack of clarity on how to make things work. All in all, barring a few comedy scenes, the entire narration makes Chal Mohan Ranga unwatchable. Utterly disappointed.
