After another huge debacle in the form of Mahanayakudu for the Nandamuri family, Kalyan Ram from the Nandamuri clan teams up with the cinematographer cum director K V Guhan for what seems like an intense thriller. Let’s see how this combination works out.
Gautham(Kalyan Ram) is an investigative journalist in a news channel who keeps getting haunted by a dream in which Aadya(Nivetha Thomas) is involved. He gets the same dream in the 118 room everytime he visits that resort. He chases those sequences in the dream and gets to know that the dream he is getting in that room is real and not just a dream. Why is he getting that dream repeatedly and is he able to uncover the reality behind those sequences in the dream forms the story of 118.
Kalyan Ram as Gautham does a really impressive job. His choice of scripts has been really diverse in the recent past and one has to say that it kind of worked out well for this venture. Shalini Pandey as Megha does a good job. Nivetha Thomas as Aadhya who’s making a sort of comeback to the Tollywood screen after her short break gets an interesting role. She does well in the small role she gets. Prabhas sreenu as the hero’s friend brings the humor relief. Chammak Chandra is seen in a couple of scenes. Hari Teja gets an important role and does okay.
The movie starts off with an intense dream of the hero and quickly gets into the main plot of the movie where the hero chases his dream and tries to find out the reason behind those scenes. The entire first half has an extremely racy screenplay with the hero not leaving behind any single clue he gets from the dream. It is decent until the end of first half.
Midway through the second half, the heroes goes behind an overwhelming number of clues and the wild goose chase gets ridiculous. The downside of the movie is that what happens is already revealed as part of the dream. All we wait for is what is the reason behind it and the complete story which makes it a bit less interesting.
Although for the most part the movie seems realistic, there are a few scenes which make no sense. For example, the hero is always seen driving in the outskirts of the city and not once he drives inside the city. The villains keep chasing and killing people who give clues to Gautham but not Gautham himself.
The cinematographic brilliance of the movie is worth mentioning. K V Guhan has given his heart and soul in writing and directing this movie. Some parts of the background score in the first half is inspired from that of 1 Nenokkadine movie. Other than that, overall the bgm and music by Sekhar Chandra was decent. On a whole, 118 is more like an english movie with a typical tollywood backstory involving medical research. Had the editing been a little better, it would have been a good watch.
