The movie Abhimanyudu is the dubbed version of the tamil "Irumbu Thirai" which was released on May 11th. It has received a good critical acclaim all over Tamil Nadu. I was waiting for the telugu version and here it is. Let's see if it is good enough for telugu audience as well.
Abhimanyudu is the story of an angry young military major Karunakar (Vishal) who gets suspended from the army owing to his anger issues ( Rings any bells? "Naa peru surya" it is :D). He goes to a Psychologist Latha Devi (Samantha) to get counselled on his anger management and develops a relationship with her over time. Coming to the main plot, Arjun (Satya Moorthy) runs a cyber mafia and collects all your credit card information and your social media information through his team and steals the money of the people. In the same way, he steals 10 lakhs from the hero's account who is in dire need of it for his sister's marriage. What are the consequences faced by Karunakar for going against Satyamoorthy and how will he overcome them form the story.
Vishal as Karunakar gives an amazing performance. It's his show all the way. He's all muscled up and looks rock solid in his appearance and performance. Samantha didn't have a big presence but she was good for the part she got. She looks so chubby and cute post marriage. Arjun is so apt to play Satyamoorthy and he gives a brilliant performance. The comedian as hero's uncle creates a few laughs. All the other actors do their job well. The casting has been spot on by the director.
I have always been a fan of these tamil dubbed movies right from Rangam. In the recent past, there have been many good thrillers in Kollywood like Thanioruvan (Dhruva), Vikram veda and this one Irumbu thirai (Abhimanyudu) is no different. The story and the screenplay starts to impress from the word go. What stands out in these movies is that taking a unique concept, they have an amazing way of narrating the story. I, so badly want our big telugu stars to do a movie like this even if they consider it a risk given their commercial stature.
The director takes the most important issue of the current generation not only in India but all over the world, the digital world and social media. "Information is money" is a saying in the movie which is so very true and isn't given much importance by a common man. Information is wealthy. Please be aware of what information your digital phone and social media gives to everyone in the world. This is the main plot of the movie and the director sticks to it throughout the narration. The movie impresses very much in the way it points out how it costs for every single sensitive information passed through technology in the digital world facing the cyber threat.
Dealing with a concept like this, the director Mithran doesn't leave behind any logic or emotion. There is enough sentiment carried throughout the movie which justifies the hero taking those aggressive steps. But, the screenplay gets a little complex during the cat and mouse games between Arjun and Vishal in the second half. He did not want to leave any logic unnoticed that the runtime of the movie is dragged a bit longer in the second half. Except for that there is nothing to dislike throughout the movie. You are never bored for 2 hr and 50 minutes if you like these kind of thriller/action movies. Definitely the movie you don't want to miss.
